Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

The Latin Snake States His Case

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): When Sergio Mora faces Samuel Rogers this Saturday night from the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, he won’t even be on the HBO Latino broadcast (which features Javier Fortuna and Orlando Del Valle in separate bouts) but he doesn’t take this as a slight. “It didn’t upset me because I’m already getting used to the bitterness,” he said with a smile this past Wednesday at the Gamboa Boxing Gym in Whittier, CA. “So it’s either... Vetyeka: the Beginning of the End for Donaire?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On Saturday in Macao, China, Nonito Donaire squares off with WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka, 26-2 (16). The fight is for more than a belt. Donaire’s career as an elite, TV fighter may be on the line. It wasn’t always like this. Three years ago, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, 32-2 (21), was at the peak of his career. He’d stopped Fernando Montiel in spectacular fashion and quickly rose on media... R.I.P. Johnny Tapia - By Matthew Aguilar

R.I.P. Johnny Tapia - By Matthew Aguilar

Reprinted from Matthew Aguilar’s May 2012 El Paso Times blog post. To appreciate what Johnny Tapia achieved in boxing, you must first consider his childhood. His mother was kidnapped, raped and murdered – by way of a screwdriver being plunged into her body over and over and over – when he was all of eight years old. He woke up in time to see her screaming, chained to the back of a pickup. He was ignored when he tried to tell others in the house... R.I.P. Johnny Tapia - By Matthew Aguilar

Darchinyan Moves Forward, Looks Back

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Vic Darchinyan faces WBA featherweight titlist Nicholas Walters this weekend at the Venetian Resort in Macao, China - but his previous fight is still on his mind. Back on November 9th in Corpus Christi, Texas, Darchinyan was literally just minutes away from pulling off the upset and gaining revenge on Nonito Donaire. Darchinyan was a heavy underdog going into this fight and was up on points when he was stopped in the ninth round... Darchinyan Moves Forward, Looks Back

Froch-Groves II: Lesson Learned?

By Gabriel Montoya: When a boxer reaches the highest echelon of the sport against an experienced, battle-tested champion with a large following and even bigger chip on his shoulder before ten of millions across the globe for the first time, we find out who he really is. Which way does he get going when the going gets in his kitchen and starts making a sandwich? Was his record padded? Had he faced enough diversity and adversity to... Froch-Groves II: Lesson Learned?

The Biggest (Domestic) Fight of the Year

By Steve Kim (Photo & Art © Pat Killian): Yeah, promotions featuring the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao might generate more revenue but it says here that the biggest and best, pure boxing event of 2014 is taking place this Saturday from the historic Wembley Stadium in London, England, where up to 80,000 (yes, you read that correctly) will be in attendance when Carl Froch and George Groves resume their feud. It’s good to know that nights like this still exist on Bash Boulevard... The Biggest (Domestic) Fight of the Year

Stevenson survives knockdown to defeat Fonfara

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME): An 8-1 underdog at the opening bell, Andrzej “The Polish Prince” Fonfara wanted to prove that he belonged in the same ring with WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson. Mission accomplished. Fanfara (25-3, 15 KOs) hung in like grim death, flooring Stevenson (24-1, 20 KOs) in round nine, but the champion dominated the early rounds to win a 12 round... Julian Williams and Stephen Edwards Head Toward the Light

Gabriel Montoya: The very foundation of boxing is the relationship between a trainer and his fighter. The relationship ranges from father and son to general and soldier. Among that spectrum are a myriad of roles. Above all, trust and the willingness to grow and change to keep the relationship fresh and healthy. Success keeps it moving forward but truly binds it. Often its genesis is the trainer’s ability to show a fighter a signature move and make it work. Such was the case with... Julian Williams and Stephen Edwards Head Toward the Light

Boxcino Finals on FNF, More to Come?

By Steve Kim: It can be argued that the best fight of the weekend is the “Boxcino” lightweight final between Petr Petrov and Fernando Carcamo from the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York, that co-headlines tonight’s edition of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.” Yes, there are higher profile cards taking place (notably on Showtime, featuring Adonis Stevenson from Montreal on Saturday evening) but the best two-way action might come from Petrov and Carcamo... Are We all Overlooking Andrzej Fonfara?

By Gabriel Montoya: Heading into this Saturday’s “Showtime Championship Boxing” card featuring Adonis Stevenson versus Andrzej Fonfara, the prevailing wisdom is this is a prelude to nothing. Originally, this fight was going to be on HBO as a precursor to a unification bout with fellow light heavyweight titleholder Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev but Stevenson, the WBC light heavyweight champion, signed with uber-manager Al Haymon and the fight fell apart. The news that... Are We all Overlooking Andrzej Fonfara?

Golovkin Moves on Without Chavez Jr.

By Steve Kim: On Saturday afternoon in a small conference room at the LAX Marriott, WBA middleweight beltholder Gennady Golovkin held a media roundtable with a select handful of boxing scribes. If it were up to him, he’d be talking about his upcoming summer showdown against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But alas, Chavez seemed more intent on battling his promoter, Top Rank Promotions than facing “GGG.”... Chavez Jr’s Choices Could Be Costly

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): The recent announcement that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., 48-1-1 (32), had turned down what appears to be a very generous offer from his promoter, Top Rank Promotions, raised a few eyebrows and questions in the boxing community. While there is no question that Chavez has worked himself into a legitimate pay-per-view attraction, especially within the lucrative and insatiable Mexican fight market, it also would appear his... Do We Plead for a Fifth?

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): It was a successful Forum homecoming for future Hall-of-Famer Juan Manuel Marquez as he defeated the rugged Mike Alvarado in front of 12,090 mostly Mexican partisans who cheered his every move. He’s come a long way from being third banana to the likes of countrymen Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera and being branded as just a safe, cautious counterpuncher. Alvarado was game but simply outgunned by the master from Mexico City, who was... Do We Plead for a Fifth?

Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

By Bill Tibbs: On May 31, a raucous Wembley Stadium in England will be rocking when the rematch between Carl Froch, 32-2 (23), and George Groves, 19-1 (15), lights up London. The iconic soccer stadium should be as heated and lively as the fight between the two United Kingdom brawlers. The first fight ended in a somewhat controversial fashion and Groves is out to prove the stoppage, deemed too quick by some, was just that. Froch will look to erase any “controversy” tag from their first... Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

Marquez-Alvarado: from Chemical Warfare to Collective Amnesia

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): I’ve never been into character assassination. I have the highest respect for professional fighters, be the sport mixed martial arts or boxing. Fighters are among the best people I know, open-minded, warm, fierce and fearless. They aspire to display the very best attributes a human can in the most dire of situations. Again and again, fighters disconnect the “flight” mechanism built into all of us and go to work. The fight itself is Marquez-Alvarado: from Chemical Warfare to Collective Amnesia
