Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Azad Championship Report - The road to Mayweather vs. Guerrero

By John J. Raspanti; The life of the traveling boxing writer can be a hodgepodge of adventure, excitement and sadly, boredom. Here I am a stones throw a way from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, where tonight, undefeated pound for pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather meets Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero for the WBC welterweight championship of the world. I’ll be at ringside to witness all the drama that only professional boxing provides. It’s all good. At least that part is... Azad Championship Report - The road to Mayweather vs. Guerrero

Meet me at the crossroads: Gabriel Rosado vs. J’Leon Love

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Esther Lin / SHOWTIME: When last seen in the ring almost four months ago, Gabriel Rosado was a battered and bloody mess. Cuts around his left eye had rendered him virtually blind. His nose was disfigured and gushing blood. Rosado, who usually fights in the junior middleweight division, had moved up in weight to challenge reigning WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Rosado (21-6, 13 KOs ) was confident. He figured he could outbox the slower Golovkin. Some... Meet me at the crossroads: Gabriel Rosado vs. J’Leon Love

Santa Cruz Returns, Rested and Rejuvenated

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): On December 15th, Leo Santa Cruz put on a late-finishing kick to defeat the pesky Alberto Guevara at the Los Angeles Sports Arena over 12 rounds. It put a capper on a 2012 where Santa Cruz performed five times and went from a relatively unknown prospect to a world champion who built a fan following for his active, hard-hitting style. But on this early afternoon, for the most part, Santa Cruz looked like a fatigued fighter. Known for his impressive work Santa Cruz Returns, Rested and Rejuvenated

“Money,” Mayday and the media

By Gabriel Montoya: Whether good or bad, the boxing business was born in a backroom and has continued to live there throughout its history. The commissions, judges, promoters, managers, trainers, fighters, strength coaches, sponsors, networks and news media in boxing all operate with the understanding that compromises, moral and otherwise, will more than likely have to be made. The boxing news media’s current state is one aspect that is compromised, in my opinion. Rather... “Money,” Mayday and the media

The Soapbox – May 2, 2013

By Steve Kim: The latest edition of “The Soapbox” comes from Gregory Link, who wrote to me in the aftermath of Amir Khan’s latest harrowing experience versus Julio Diaz in his homecoming to Sheffield this past weekend. Khan escaped with a close victory and was dumped to the canvas in the fourth and hurt again significantly in the 11th round. While many rightly see flaws in Khan, our latest individual who steps onto “The Soapbox” sees something much different... "I just finished watching The Soapbox – May 2, 2013

Azad Championship Report - Man in the Middle

By Steve Kim: It’s not unusual for two fighters from the same promotional entity to compete in the ring. In fact, with the state of the business nowadays, it’s the easiest way to make a fight. Most of the major firms, whether they be Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank, Don King Productions or Main Events, have all made a multitude of in-house match-ups pitting their clients against each other. It’s happening this weekend when WBC featherweight titlist Daniel Ponce de Leon defends Azad Championship Report - Man in the Middle

Azad Championship Report - Mayweather vs. Guerrero – May Day or Ghost Sighting?

By Marc Livitz: Cinco de Mayo weekend is fast approaching and that usually means what it has meant in years past. Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr., who can now truly be the one who sits alone well atop the mythical yet at times nonsensical “Pound for Pound” rankings will be the center stage in Las Vegas. The undisputed king of the boxing box office holds an undefeated record of 43 wins (26 KO’s) and no losses. Forty two have tried and failed. One has tried twice and failed twice...
