Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Azad Championship Report - Can the "Viking Warrior" Charm "The Cobra"?

By Gabriel Montoya: A rematch of a fight as savage and closely contested as the April 24, 2010 fight between Denmark’s Mikkel “The Viking Warrior” Kessler, 46-2-0 (35), and Nottingham, U.K.’s Carl “The Cobra” Froch, 30-2 (22), begs many questions. Who will improve since the first fight? Who took more damage and how well did he heal since? How will the fighters react when the home canvas advantage is switched? In order to succeed in Saturday’s rematch - his first - Kessler hopes to have... Azad Championship Report - Can the "Viking Warrior" Charm "The Cobra"?

This Machine is no Myth

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): If we learned one thing this past weekend, it’s this: men might be affected by jetlag but wrecking machines certainly aren’t. And though he got in late this past week prior to his Saturday night assignment versus Lamont Peterson, Lucas Matthysse showed no ill effects of his long journey from Argentina to the States that saw him arrive in Atlantic City just a couple of days before the fight. What was supposed to be a competitive, hard- This Machine is no Myth

“The Machine” Matthysse rolls over Peterson in three

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Tom Casino/ SHOWTIME): Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, Argentina’s Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse, (34-2, 32 KOs), closed the distance versus Washington, D.C.’s Lamont Peterson, (31-2-1, 16 KOs), and then closed the show in a display of raw and very real power. The fight, televised by Showtime, was a match-up of elite junior welterweight fighters fought at a catch weight of 141 pounds. While it was a non-title affair... “The Machine” Matthysse rolls over Peterson in three

The Future of Puerto Rico?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Peter Amador / Top Rank): Right now, there is a bit of a vacuum in Puerto Rican boxing. This proud island, which treats the sport as it’s national pastime, has had a glorious succession of prizefighters that has seen the likes of Wilfredo Gomez, Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto become cultural icons. But with Cotto clearly on the back nine of his career and Juan Manuel Lopez failing to living up to expectations, a void currently exists. Currently, there is just one major The Future of Puerto Rico?

Can Peterson Dismantle “The Machine”? (Part Two of Two)

By Steve Kim: There is a bit of mythology regarding Lucas Matthysse, who is Lamont Peterson’s foe this Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City (Showtime 9 p.m., ET/PT). Yes, he is certainly a formidable 140-pounder and possesses heavy hands and a certain toughness that cannot be taught. But if you look at his actual résumé, you’ll see two disputed losses in his biggest fights (versus Zab Judah and Devon Alexander) and his most notable win, against Ajose Olusegun. Yeah, we Can Peterson Dismantle “The Machine”? (Part Two of Two)

A Love Story

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): On Wednesday afternoon, the Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Keith Kizer, sent this email out to various members of the media: All test results for 5/3 were negative. All test results for 5/4 were negative, except Matthew Garretson tested positive for Furosemide and J’Leon Love tested positive for Hydrochlorothiazide. The Stigma: Part One (with Lamont Peterson)

By Steve Kim: On February 22nd at the D.C. Armory in the nation’s capital, Lamont Peterson successfully defended his IBF junior welterweight title after a 14-month hiatus from the ring. Back in 2012, while preparing for his rematch with Amir Khan (whom he had defeated in December of 2011), Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone. In front of a national audience on ESPN2, he made his triumphant return by chopping down Kendall Holt in eight rounds... The Stigma: Part One (with Lamont Peterson)
