Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Porter, Malignaggi and the Trouble with Testing

By Gabriel Montoya: Early on, 2014 looked like it could be a banner year for the combat sports causes of anti-doping testing and fighters’ health and safety. It has certainly started off with great potential. In early January, Nevada’s athletic commission accepted the resignation of its now-former Executive Director Keith Kizer. Mr. Kizer had been a part of the proliferation of therapeutic usage exemptions for synthetic testosterone for... Porter, Malignaggi and the Trouble with Testing

Pacquiao Quietly Goes About Being a Real Fighter

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor): Boxing is a sport that can survive and thrive for a long time on the strength of a series of bouts - or even a single bout - if the recipe is right. The public interest can be electrified and galvanized to the point that the sport becomes “must see” sports viewing. Whether in series or one-offs, bouts like Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson, Marvelous Marvin Hagler-Sugar Ray Leonard and on a smaller scale... Mikey Garcia vs. Top Rank

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It turns out that the big fight for WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia in 2014 will not be against Yuriorkis Gamboa but against his own promoter, Top Rank Promotions, who he recently filed suit against in a story broken by BadCulture.net. You could see this coming a mile (or least a month ago) away when Garcia accompanied his brother/trainer Robert Garcia to Las Vegas for the Saul Alvarez-Alfredo Angulo fight, which was promoted... Roach Reflects on Pacquiao’s Victory

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): Noted trainer Freddie Roach is already back to his daily grind at the gym. On Tuesday afternoon at the downstairs portion of the Wild Card Boxing Club (a Laundromat in a former life), he had finished up his day’s work with Ruslan Provodnikov (who faces Chris Algieri on June 14th) and was awaiting the arrival of Miguel Cotto (who faces middleweight king Sergio Martinez on June 7th). Spirit, Strategy and Belief Are not Alien to Hopkins

By Gabriel Montoya: “When you’re young, you overdo things a lot and you get away with it. When you have wisdom and you have understanding, you learn how to not overdo things where you rest and save your money like investing and you go ahead and you spend it tomorrow. By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): Manny ’Pacman’ Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) showed Timothy Bradley (31-1, 12 KOS) that his fighting fire is still burning by winning a clear 12 round unanimous decision Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jessie Vargas “I'm tired of hiding in the shadows”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the moment, the U.S. boxing world is a dual universe commonly described as the “Cold War.” For the most part, this means Top Rank Promotions is on HBO and Golden Boy Promotions/Al Haymon’s stable of fighters is on Showtime. What this means for the boxing fan is there are only certain fights that will get made. When it comes to 140 and 147-pound divisions, what it currently means to Top Rank is that finding talent to be developed... Jessie Vargas “I'm tired of hiding in the shadows”

Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... Something Wicked This Way Comes; Pacquiao, Bradley and the Endless Search for Respect

By Gabriel Montoya (Image created by Chee, MaxBoxing): “Too late, I found you can’t wait to become perfect, you got to go out and fall down and get up with everybody else.” - Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes. || Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, two champions will meet. How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Manny Pacquiao is a fighter of many punches. However, most of the time, he’s a man of few words, which is a bit of a problem when you attempt to interview him. No, it’s not that he’s unpleasant or angry with the media - he’s just the opposite in fact - but by nature, he’s a soft-spoken individual (at least with the American press) and while much is on the line this upcoming Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

U.S.S Cunningham Defeats Mansour & Showtime Stevens gets a late stoppage

By: Luis A. Recently signed by Peltz Boxing, Cherry scored a unanimous decision win over the game Robert Osiobe, 14-9-4 (6) with scores of 77-75, 79-73 and 78-74. How Binding?

By Steve Kim: With much fanfare - and to the disappointment of many boxing fans - it was announced last week that the reigning light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson would be facing Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as part of a deal struck with Showtime (which could eventually lead to a bout against Bernard Hopkins). Kathy Duva on the (Dying?) Art of Promoting

By Gabriel Montoya: “We need to sign all the talent and get all the TV dates.” - Oscar De la Hoya, September 2010 / Since Floyd Mayweather, Al Haymon and Golden Boy Promotions all walked from HBO to Showtime, Oscar De la Hoya’s then-controversial statement to broadcastingcable.com seems to be coming true more than ever. While how it is being done is an issue for De la Hoya, that it is being done at all is likely a problem for the sport as a whole. We’ve had the “Cold War” going for Kathy Duva on the (Dying?) Segura’s on the Cusp

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): By the end of 2011, Giovani Segura was considered one of the better fighters in the sport. No, he wasn’t one of the most technically sound or stylish performers in the game but it was hard to argue with the results of this two-handed slugger. Simply out, Segura cut a swath through the light flyweight division while riding the crest of two career-defining victories over the previously undefeated Ivan Calderon.
