Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Christian Kuechl): WBA middleweight boxing champion Gennady Golovkin retained his title Saturday night by stopping courageous challenger Martin Murray in round 11 at the Salle des Etoile Arena in Monte Carlo. The knockout victory was the 19th consecutive for Golovkin, who also defended his middleweight crown for the 13th time. Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) started slowly in the opening stanza. Abraham plans to knock out Smith on Feb. 21

By John J. Raspanti: Paul Smith has managed to get under the skin of WBO super-middleweight champion Arthur Abraham. The pair met last September when Abraham won by unanimous decision. Nearly everyone, excepting Smith’s corner-and his family, had Abraham the victor. The problem was the margin of victory. Two judges scored the fight 117-111 for Abraham, while the third must have been watching another bout. His 119-109 tally was ridiculous. This writer had Abraham ahead by two points. DeGale likely to face Dirrell for super middleweight title

By John J. Raspanti: Super middleweight contender James DeGale has been calling out IBF champion Carl Froch for months. Froch, 37, also the “regular” WBA champion, scoffed at DeGale’s challenges, using words “lack of motivation” and “no interest.” Last Tuesday, Froch vacated his title, opening up the possibility that DeGale, 29, will face Andre Dirrell on April 25 at the O2 Arena in London, England. Barrera takes advantage of aging Lacy

By John J. Raspanti: In the sport of boxing, every fighter worth his salt ends up in the ring facing an opponent whose skills have dimished. It may be a rite of passage, but it can also be hard to watch. Last Friday night, at the Foxwoods Resorts in Mashantucket, CN., undefeated light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera went in search of an impressive victory. His opponent was former super-middleweight champion Jeff Lacy, 37, a loser in four of his last seven fights. None of this mattered. Lacy is a Barrera takes advantage of aging Lacy

On the Move: MaxBoxing Rankings 2-2-15

By Derek Bonnett: In 2014, Rocky Juarez did something he had not done in a long time; he strung two victories together for the first time since 2007. Sounds amazing when you put it that way. Not that he actually won two in row (the first was a 2012 stoppage of Antonio Escalante), but that it has been so long since the veteran Juarez has been able to do so. In between those wins, Juarez even took a year off. Juarez’ 2014 win was a surprise decision over Rene Alvarado. Alvarado was a genuine top On the Move: MaxBoxing Rankings 2-2-15

Darnell “The Deezol” Boone: The man who refuses to stay down

By John J. Raspanti: In his 15 years as a professional fighter, Darnell Boone has been labeled a journeyman by some, and a gatekeeper by others. He’s also a spoiler, having ended the unbeaten winning streaks of boxers Chris Archer, James Countryman, James Johnson, and a guy named Adonis Stevenson, who just happens to be reigning WBC light heavyweight champion. Boone, 35, is also the only man to knock undefeated super middleweight champion, Andre Ward, to the canvas. Ward got up to win, but he Darnell “The Deezol” Boone: The man who refuses to stay down

5 Champs Who Will Remain and 5 Who Will Go in 2015

By Derek Bonnett: As we encounter another new year, the landscape of the boxing scene continues to evolve. With old champions acting out the final stages of their careers and new ones emerging to fill the void, boxing maintains a state of homeostasis and keeps fight fans intrigued even amid the dubious officiating and cries of scandal. Rios systematically destroys Alvarado

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): here was no need to hype the third fight between warriors Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. Their first two bouts were brutal delights, with each man claming a victory. The main question heading into tonight’s third go-around was who had more left in the tank. Two minutes into the rubber match, it was obvious that Rios was the more energetic fighter. The 28-year-old from Oxnard, Ca. pounded Alvarado from pillar to post--leading to a stoppage..
