Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. barely broke a sweat as he stopped a clearly overmatched Carlos Ocampo at the end of round one in front of a soldout home crowd at the Ford Center in Frisco center in Frisco,TX. Spence, a Dallas native, brought in an attendance of 12,604 for his second defense of his IBF welterweight title.

Spence’s knockout of Ocampo improved his perfect record (24-0, 21 KOs) while Ocampo (21-1, 13 KOs) fell for the first time in his professional career.

The fight was fun while it lasted. Spence and Ocampo were willing to trade shots in the ring; however, it was Spence’s blows had a much greater impact. In the build up to the knockout, Spence continued to land vicious body shots at will. Within a minute or so of the opening bell, Ocampo started to let his hands go. He did some good work to the body of Spence, but Spence answered back almost immediately with a hard left to the chin that caught Ocampo’s attention. Spence sensed that his body work was hurting Ocampo, he started really sitting down on his shots.

In the closing seconds, Spence, connected with a left-right combination to the body that immediately paralyzed Ocampo and sent him to his knees. Ocampo tried to get up, but the temporary paralysis did not subside before referee Lawrence Cole reached the count of 10.

The ringside medics came in the ring to check on a still visibly wounded Ocampo while Spence celebrated in his corner. Ocampo left the ring shortly after the doctor cleared him, while Spence gave an interview to Showtime Boxing’s Jim Gray.

When asked how he felt about the fight, Spence’s response was a little surprising.

“I was a little disappointed,” said Spence. “I wanted to give the crowd their money’s worth. I wanted him to, you know, sustain a little more punishment. But the body shot landed right on point and dropped him.”

Spence then announced to his fans that he intends to make fighting in his hometown an annual event. What’s next for Errol Spence Jr.?

After knocking out his IBF mandatory opponent, I believe Spence will be looking to seal a bigger name fight towards the end of the year. Fans unanimously want to see Spence fight Terence Crawford, who also impressed last weekend when he stopped former WBO champion Jeff Horn. Unforunatley, that bout seems very unlikely to happen any time soon given the promotional issues involved. Another fan friendly fight be a unification match with Keith Thurman. However, Thurman, who is coming back from injury, has stated tha he needs a few tune up fights prior to a showdown with Spence.

The likely next opponent for Spence will be the winner of the upcoming bout between two former world champions Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter. They are scheduled to meet August 25,2018 in a highly anticipated showdown.

Whatever happens next, the future is very bright for Errol Spence Jr.
