So long Steve and the undisputed champ, and hello Max!

I’ve never been so happy to see the back of Steve Kim.

The long-time boxing scribe, and ringside analyst, was leaving his regular writing gig at The Undisputed Championship Network and I was very glad to see him go.

Why? Because he was moving to a new position with broadcasting giant ESPN.

And, ESPN, in a new long-term deal with Top Rank, and one of the major platforms for boxing, is a great fit for Steve. While Steve is very happy to be working for such an established and respected franchise like ESPN, in truth, this is a serious win-win for both players.

ESPN has snagged one of the best writers out there and a guy who is a walking encyclopedia of the fight game. Kim brings a great perspective to the table, knows the industry inside and out and is both humorous and honest in his breakdown of fighters and upcoming fights.

I had the pleasure of being part of the same team as Steve at UCNlive.com and got to know him as both a great writer and a great person. While I always looked forward to reading Steve’s weekly thoughts on the sport, I also loved him live from ringside at various events and watching him on his (always entertaining) podcasts as well.

In short, this is a great move for Steve and a huge score for ESPN. “Kimster” has paid his dues, worked long and hard in boxing’s media trenches and deserves every bit of success he gets and more.

When Steve announced he was leaving The Undisputed Champion Network for ESPN, the site was entering a state of uncertainty and articles had come to halt.

So, this article is in the ‘better late than never’ category but I couldn’t let Steve move on without a proper send off. With my last work station coming to a somewhat unexpected end I vowed that the first story I was going to write, after finding a new place for my boxing musings to land, was a piece on Steve.

I was always thrilled to call Steve a colleague and even more so a friend. Viva K-9!

How did I get here?

For a long time I was a feature writer for The Undisputed Championship Network and I had a great ride there with Steve Kim, (editor) Coyote Duran, Mike Baca and others. (I might hold the distinction as posting the last story there?).

But, the site is not moving forward and I was looking for a new home for my stories. So, I reached out to lead writer John Raspanti, another of my favourite boxing scribes, about coming back to the site where I originally got my start with my “Remembering a True Champion” series.

I am thrilled to be back at Maxboxing and look forward to providing content on all the latest boxing news.
