Regis Prograis now a two-time world champion, stops Jose Zepeda

Regis Prograis stopped Jose Zepeda in round 11 to capture the WBC junior welterweight world title. 

Prograis dominated with skillful boxing, and in round 11, knockout power.

 

“At first I wanted to come and box," said Prograis after the fight."Then, in the second or third round, I caught my rhythm.”

 

In round one, southpaw Zepeda fired jabs. Prograis, bobbing and weaving left and right, blocked the blows. Zepeda connected with a left to the chin. 

 

Fellow lefthander Prograis (28-1, 24 KOs) picked up the pace in round two. A left scored - followed by a right.

Zepeda fought back. Prograis landed a solid left to the chin. 

 

Prograis landed a sharp combination in round three. Zepeda was now a step behind. Louisiana native Prograis connected with two hard lefts. 

 

Zepeda (35-3, 27 KOs) landed a solid right. Prograis clipped Zepeda with a solid jab and two good lefts. He tried to steal the momentum in round four. 

 

Prograis jabbed and stayed in rhythm. Zepeda fired multiple right jabs. 

 

Blood was dripping from near Zepeda’s right eye.

 

In round five, Prograis marched after Zepeda - connecting with jabs. Prograis worked up - landing three blows. 

Zepeda caught Prograis with a hook. 

 

Former and now champion, Prograis scored with combinations in round six. Zepeda, attempting to win a world title for the third, was finding it difficult to land anything solid. 

 

Prograis connected with a left hand in round seven. Zepeda jabbed but ate two rights. 

 

Zepeda went to the ribs. Prograis countered with volume.

 

Prograis connected with a sweeping left. Zepeda jabbed, not something you normally do when losing a fight. Prograis fired a combination. 

 

Seconds later, he strafed Zepeda with jabs. 

 

Prograis continued to outfight Zepeda in round nine. He was quicker and sharper. 

 

Zepeda followed but didn’t punch. Prograis cracked him with two lefts.

 

Prograis circled and punched in round 10. Zepeda landed a solid left. Prograis took it well. Zepeda fell into the ropes. Prograis unloaded.

 

Zepeda tried to fight back. 

 

Prograis caught Zepeda with a right that had to hurt. In round 11, Prograis unloaded a big left that staggered

Zepeda into the ropes. Prograis pounced with punches. 

 

Zepeda, hurt and tired, slowly sunk to the canvas.

 

The referee glanced at the glassy-eyed Zepeda and waved off the fight.

 

The time was 59 seconds into round 11.
