Mayol Rematches Calderon on His Island

If boxing Ivan Calderon in Madison Square Garden in New York on the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade is like fighting in Puerto Rico, Rodel Mayol gets a taste of the real thing when he faces the defending WBO jr. flyweight champion this Saturday night, once again, in San Juan.

Back on June 13th, these two fought to a technical decision draw over six rounds, after a clash of heads opened up a cut on Calderon in the fourth round, that forced the bout to be halted. Up till that juncture, the fight was a close and competitive affair.

" I remember that we had a good fight in New York and many people say I won. So I have a lot of confidence this time," Mayol said last week, before he entered the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California.

Touching Calderon consistently can be like catching a fly with chopsticks. If there was ever the definition of a pure boxer, it would be this slick, southpaw who has registered just six stoppages in 34 professional outings." Yeah, it’s difficult because he’s moving his head and he moves around," admitted Mayol, on hitting Calderon cleanly." So it’s difficult, so you need to have timing to hit him. You have to be in balance to hit him and you have to throw many punches."

The key, is to throw them in bunches.

" If you only throw one or two punches, you wont hit him," he says.

Mayol says he his buoyed by the success he was having in their first encounter," I have a lot of confidence this time. I know his power, he can’t hurt me. His power is not that strong that’s why I can say I’m ready to go inside and go toe-to-toe. Even if he hits me, I can hit him, too. That’s OK."

But can a relatively unknown Filipino fighter go to the islands and beat a Puerto Rican icon? The battles between the Philippines and Puerto Rico fighters is the newest burgeoning rivalry in boxing. This fight takes place on the same weekend that both Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto are in town to hype their November 14th showdown

" Maybe I can win a decisions over there," he says, with hope." I can hit him with clear, clean punches. It’s difficult to win there but I’ll try my best and hit him in order for the judges to see the winner."

TIX

Speaking of return bouts, tickets for the November do-over between Chad Dawson and Glen Johnson on November 7th at the XLCenter in Hartford, CT, go on sale next Friday, September the 18th.

And from this vantage point, it looks the seats are very affordable at: $200,. $100, $70, $50 and $35. It looks they are going for volume in order to build Dawson- who hails from near-by New Haven- as a ticket seller in the local market.

To purchase tickets you can log onto: xlcenter.com or call 800-745-3000.

SHOWTIME FOR BRADLEY-PETERSON?

There are several snags in regards to the WBO jr. welterweight title bout between Tim Bradley and Lamont Peterson, but if that fight does not happen for whatever reason on December 5th, I’ve been told that Showtime will then go with a doubleheader of Joan Guzman-Ali Funeka and Vic Darchinyan-Tomas Rojas.

There is also some discussions of showing another title fight from overseas on same-day tape delay.

FRIDAY FLURRIES

On Friday night, Thompson Boxing Promotions returns to the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. The main event is Josesito Lopez vs. Anthony Mora....Hearing that HBO’s newest preference is to not go December 26th with Shane Mosley and Joshua Clottey and instead go with Mosley against Andre Berto on January 30th of 2010. But there are several problems with that, Berto and his folks don’t want to sit out the rest of 2009. Also, that January 30th date they are looking at, was reserved for Bernard Hopkins, who wanted that slot to commemorate his 45th birthday, which takes place a couple of weeks before.....Lots of intriguing games this weekend on the collegiate gridiron: UCLA-Tenn( Norm Chow and Lane Kiffin, guru versus disciple), Notre Dame-Michigan( the battle of embattled South Carolina vs. Georgia( Darth Visor, Steve Spurrier takes on the Dawgs) As for USC-Ohio State? Yeah, not so intriguing, we all know what Pete Carroll and his crew do to Big 11 programs.....Folks, we’ve changed servers on our site, so please bear with us.
