I grew up a boxing fan in the 1970’s and 80’s. Back then, the heavyweight division was king. Names like Ali, Frazier, Foreman and Holmes still give me chills when I think about them, even today.
Most fans know those names, but do they remember Karl Mildenberger, “Scrap Iron” Johnson or Boone Kirkman?
In the new book, “Gloves Gone By,” James Amato takes us on a very fun journey down the heavyweight memory lane. His short essays on individual heavyweights transport us from 1960 through 1980. We are reminded of the underrated and forgotten Doug Jones, tough guy Jack O’Halloran, and many others that get their much deserved time in the spotlight.
The book brings back so many great memories and also reminds the reader of fighters we don’t think about much any longer.
1960-1980 were glorious times in heavyweight boxing indeed and author Amato sinks his teeth into the subject and into you, as I’m sure once you pick up the book, it won’t be put back down until the last page is turned.
Although the heavyweight division is in the middle of a minor resurgence currently, the glory days of heavyweight boxing will never be seen again.
“Gloves Gone By” is a must for all boxing fans, young and old.
I strongly recommend picking up a copy. I’ve read it twice to date, and I have a feeling the next time I’m sitting around doing nothing, a third read will be in order.
The book is available on Amazon in hardcover, paperback or on kindle:
