Gervonta Davis requires less than a round to stop Hugo Ruiz
Acting as if he had a plane to catch, WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis stopped Hugo Ruiz in the opening round at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Ca Saturday night.
Davis (21-0, 20 KOs) rocked and rolled from the opening bell, cracking the much taller Ruiz with straight shots and hooks. Ruiz tried to fight back, but nothing he did slowed down the champion. Finally, near the end of the stanza, Davis forced Ruiz in a corner and connected with a wicked right cross that sent Ruiz (39-5, 33 KOs) to one knee. Ruiz, with blood dripping from his nose, beat the count but staggered-causing referee Jack Reiss to wave the fight off.
The time was 2:59.
