Particulars: On Sunday, (NOT Saturday) March 24, 2019 at Oxon Hill, Maryland (PBC) it’s Sergey "Samurai" Lipinets vs. Lamont "Havoc" Peterson, PBC.

Background: Aging Lamont Peterson, whose touching backstory we’ve covered before, takes on

Lipinets – a Kazak born Russian now living in Beverley Hills. Both have been to the top of the hill and failed; Peterson halted by Lucas Matthysse and retiring between rounds against Errol Spence. Lipinets, while displaying amazing improvement in contrast to his earlier, and few, professional fights- came up short against Mikey Garcia.

The smart money has to be on Lipinets. In doing research for this fight, I will disclose that the thoughtful and articulate Peterson, who offered medical excuses for his indefinite suspension by the New York Athletic Commission, is not the only sibling thus suspended. His brother Anthony was, too. Did Anthony also have medical excuses?

If Lipinet’s continues his of dramatic improvement, he could be yet another player at 147. If he looks average, 140 may be his natural home. Peterson, no mistake, needs some type of career night to remain relevant. One or both will be punished for a merely ordinary performance.

Fighter’s Grades: (Speed, Power, Defense, Reach, Age, Stamina, Experience)

Sergey Lipinets: B B-B-B-B-B C+ (Average of all) B- (2.7)

Lamont Peterson: B B- B- B C- B B+ (Average of all) B- (2.8)

Reality Check: If Lipinets fails in reaching the upper echelons of welter (or Jr. welter if he goes back down) one factor may be a lack of great power. He certainly shook up Mikey Garcia but never had him in dire straits. Lipinets said that Garcia’s experience began to show as their fight wore on, leading to his lone defeat. I’m inclined to agree and if Garcia, who is regarded as a paragon of perfect fundamentals, really is that good – Lipinets, who cracked Mikey 144 times, must be an outstanding fighter in his own right.

Lipinets started as a kickboxer and had a very limited amateur boxing career. Versus Garcia, his punches were tighter, he had some head movement. He also showed good intensity, grit and some wonderfully sharp counterpunching. Maybe he’s a natural, because he looked like a complete professional against Garcia and not a kickboxer who figured “why not?”

Lipinets states in an interview in Russian, which as translated, reveals him as a really bright guy – that he wasn’t invited to the WBSS 140 pound tournament. It’s an outrage and caused Lipinets to jump to 147, the toughest, most talented, top dogs of the sport. Allot him props for confidence.

Lamont Peterson has a fan friendly style and states that style will be on display against Lipinets. Despite his agressive style, Peterson has a very modest KO percentage. He is fighting likley for hard cash, rather than any real hopes of another title shot. Then again, these days there are a lot of titles. He’s got all the punches, a lot of speed, throws in combination and has great stamina.

Fight and prediction: All will be revealed, to quote Led Zeppelin. If the work-in-progress Lipinets does continue to progress, exhibits much better defense than versus Garcia and moves his head a bit to boot, fans could see one hell of a fight; albeit a slightly technical one. If Lipinets takes a lot of shots from punching machine Peterson, he needs to keep his options at 140, open.

I see Lipinet’s slashing punches getting the better of Peterson in an exciting fight.

Lipinets TKO Peterson 11.
