Chris Colbert scores important victory over Jaime Arboleda
Chris Colbert scored the most important victory of his career, stopping tough contender Jaime Arboleda at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Saturday night.
Colbert (15-0, 6 KOs) knocked the Arboleda (16-2, 13 KOs) to the canvas in round nine. Arboleda managed to survive, but Colbert floored Arboleda twice in round 11 - following up with blow after blow until Steve Willis stopped the fight. Colbert was more accurate, while Arboleda threw more punches.
The time 1:37 of the 11th round.
"I dominated the whole fight," said Colbert. "I probably gave him two rounds, but that was by choice. I just wanted to build his confidence because I knew I was going to stop him in the later rounds. I came to show the 130-pound division that I can punch. I’m here and I’m here to stay."
Super lightweight prospect Richardson Hitchins (12-0, 5 KOs) remained unbeaten, scoring a strange split-decision victory over Argenis Mendez (25-6-3, 12 KOs). Two judges scored the 10-round contest 98-92 and 99-91 for Hitchins, while the other saw Mendez he victor by a 97-93 tally.
"I rate my performance a B-plus," said Hitchins."I think I might have lost one round. "
Matt Korobov was winning his fight against Ronald Ellis (18-1, 12 KOs) until he injured his left Achilles. Korobov (28-4-1, 1, 14 KOs) was in obvious pain when the fight was called. The injury happened in the fourth round.
"I know he dies out in the later rounds so I was going to step on it in the second half of the fight," said Ellis.
Korobov,37, loses for the second time in a row due to an injury.
