Michael Buffer Turns 65 and Celebrates with 3rd USO Visit to Wounded Troops!

Mon 2-Nov-2009 17:48

Boxing’s premiere ring announcer, Michael Buffer, is 65 years old on November 2nd and while now being eligible for medicare and social security benefits he has no plans to retire anytime soon.  He will celebrate with one of the busiest periods of his career for the next six weeks as he takes off for Washington DC and the famous FIGHT NIGHT FOR CHILDREN charity evening this Thursday then flying to Nuremburg for Saturday’s WBA heavyweight world title contest between champion Nikolai Valuev and challenger David Haye.  The day after that he and wife Christine will visit the USO center at Grafenworehr (Germany), US Army Installation to be followed by their 3rd trip to Kaiserslautern and a two day stay visiting the wounded warriors at Landstuhl Military Hospital and Ramstein Air Force Base.

"We get home on the 12th and it’s right off to Vegas for the Cotto-Paquaio super fight on the 14th", says Buffer.  "Of course, I am very disappointed that I’m unable to be at the Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson II bout in Hartford (on HBO) and I envy whoever fills in for me as I know he will get to be part of a great fight but my plans for Germany including the USO tour were made some time ago.  The same thing will happen all over again in December as I am committed to shows in Japan and Switzerland and must miss a few more USA shows including the Diaz-Malinaggi rematch.  I wish I could be in two places at once but this has been happening for years and I’m used to it."

The most famous brand in boxing, EVERLAST, has always come through for the troops on Buffer’s USO trips, sending boxes of gloves for him to autograph and personalize.  "I can’t say enough about EVERLAST and their contribution," Buffer has to say, "When I go through the hospital and USO centers and can give these heroes a little something like an autographed boxing glove and see their honest appreciation it warms my heart...these guys and gals are so damn courageous...it blows me away that I can give those who give so much, a moment of joy by signing a glove for them and writing, ’Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!’  When Christine and I go out on the runway at Ramstein to say goodbye to the wounded troops, on stretchers, that we saw in hospital the day before, being loaded into a C-17 for their trip home and they’re holding those boxing gloves like teddy bears...well, it’s a moment that stays with you forever."

While away, Buffer will be seen on ABC’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA in a profile feature on November 7th and has taped two more appearances for the RACHEL RAY SHOW (he kicked off sweeps last week with RR) and he currently has a national TV commercial running for Kelloggs (Frosted Mini-Wheats) plus he can be seen in the blockbuster disaster movie, 2012.
