Recently a report surfaced that President Trump was considering a pardon for former heavyweight champion of the world, Jack Johnson.

Actor and boxing fanatic Sylvester Stallone of Rocky fame reached out to the President to provide the back story of Johnson and ask that he be considered for a pardon.

Johnson, who held the world heavyweight championship from 1908-1915, was convicted in 1913 for violating the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport women across state lines for "immoral" purposes. The conviction was highly controversial and driven by racial prejudice. Johnson served his jail time but the stigma of his conviction has lasted for generations.

With the President mulling the decision, initially conceived by Senator John McCain in 2004, one can’t help but to think back to Trump’s involvement in boxing over thirty years ago. In 1987, Trump Plaza hosted six world title fights in Atlantic City—highlighted a year later by Mike Tyson’s destruction of Michael Spinks.

In a recent sit down with Forbes 30 Under 30 (sports) entrepreneur, and boxing manager, Adrian Clark, the topic of Trump in boxing was discussed.

“It would be very interesting to have him (Trump) back in boxing,” Clark said. “It definitely wouldn’t hurt. I’ve heard stories of the star-studded shows at the Taj Mahal, or WrestleMania at the Trump Plaza. Let’s bring that back. His name will bring controversy but that sells in boxing. Not to mention with his political power, we can add reforms similar to the Muhammad Ali Act to help educate and protect the fighters.

“In the meantime, it’ll be great if he makes his way back in boxing with a pardon for the legend, Jack Johnson,” added Clark.
