Williams Retains Title

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – Jimmy Williams of New Haven, Connecticut retained his WBC-USNBC welterweight championship when he knocked out Issouf Kinda of Bronx, New York in the fourth round of a scheduled 10-round bout on Saturday at Foxwoods resort Casino.

In the fourth round, with the fighters trading punches along the ropes. They clinched. While referee Steve Smoger was moving into to break them, they got their hands free. They each threw a shot and Williams’ right hand landed first, dropping Kinda. The fight was over at 1 minute, 26 seconds.

Kinda’s cornermen jumped into the ring to protest. Security ordered them out of the ring and the ring area.

The first three rounds were fairly even. Kinda landed some solid overhand rights

Just before the bell at the end of the first, Kinda landed a right hand. Williams countered with a left hook. Kinda stumbled to the canvas, but Smoger ruled it a slip.

Williams improved to 14-0-1 (6 knockouts); Kinda dropped to 18-5 (7).

Juiseppe Cusumano of Carini, Sicily stopped Robert Dunton of Wilmington, Delaware, in the first round of a scheduled six-rounder at heavyweight. The fight ended at 2 minutes of the first. He’s now 12-1 (10); Dunton dropped to 11-17-1 (6).

Junior welterweight Jamaine Ortiz of Worcester, Massachusetts won a four-round unanimous decision against Angel Figueroa of Lorain, Ohio. All three judges scored it 40-36. Ortiz is now 5-0 (3); Figueroa is 4-5-1.

In a battle of undefeated junior welterweights Cristobal Marrero of New London, Connecticut won a six-round split decision against Miguel Ortiz of Springfield, Mass. The scores were 57-56 (twice) for Marrero and 57-56 for Ortiz. Marrero dropped Ortiz in the fifth round with a left hook. Marrero is now 5-0 (2); Ortiz dropped to 4-1 (2).

Richard Rivera of Hartford, Connecticut won a four-round unanimous decision against debuting Leandro Silva of Sao Paolo, Brazil at cruiserweight. All three judges scored it 40-35 for Rivera (3-0, 2 KO s).

Super middleweight Jarel Pemberton of Boston made his pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Nate Schulte of Woburn, Massachusetts. All three judges scored it 39-37. Pemberton is the son of former super middleweight world title challenger Scott Pemberton. Schulte dropped to 0-3.

Jose Rivera of Hartford, Connecticut won a four-round unanimous decision over Corwin Farmer of Raleigh, North Carolina at junior middleweight Peter Harry and Robert Paolino scored it 40-36. Steve Weisfield scored it 39-37. Rivera is 4-1 (3); Farmer is 1-2.
