WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will not fight again in 2016. Wilder retained his version of the world title in Birmingham, Alabama last Saturday after knocking out Chris Arreola in the eighth round but in doing so broke his right hand and injured his bicep.
Following the victory Wilder spent most of the night in hospital to have his injuries assessed.
Promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com "He’s(Wilder) definitely going to need surgery on his right hand," DiBella said. "He will have it as soon as is practical. He will likely also require surgery on his biceps."
After the fight Dr. David Williams, an Alabama commission physician, diagnosed the broken hand and said Wilder also had a probable distal biceps tear.
