Walsh Stops Traynor In 5

By Olly Campbell : Norfolk’s Ryan Walsh, 20-1-1 (9) lived up to his billing as a headline attraction on the Queensbury Promotions card at London’s York Hall in Bethnal Green,London on Friday night, making the first defence of his British featherweight strap with a stylish fifth round knockout of the previously unbeaten Darren Traynor, 11-1 (5).

Walsh entered the fight a considerable favourite, and was cheered raucously by over 200 travelling supporters packed into the upper tiers of the famous venue, although after the first bell rang, he initially struggled as the fight got off to a scrappy start with both men tangling frequently until the champion temporarily found some kind rhythm, attempting to flow off the lead left hand.

Traynor, a seasoned amateur and 2x Scottish ABA champion, looked to maximise his size and reach advantages in the second round, maintaining a composed demeanour and catching Walsh with a crisp long right that almost felled the shocked champion and muted his cheering fanbase, at least temporarily. Buoyed by the success, the Scot continued the round in much the same vein and took it on the cards of this observer with the cleaner punches and more composed work.

An accidental clash of heads in the third round cut Traynor above the right eye, and Walsh, now settling to the task in hand, began to move in and out of range with a fleetness of foot that started to confuse the travelling Scot, who looked more and more like a tiring fish, now clearly out of water. Cleanly tagging Traynor on the inside in the fourth with quick short punches, Walsh smiled as the look of discouragement on his opponents face said it all as they walked back to their corners at the sound of the bell, awaiting the next round.

The finish in the fifth came with two left hooks that stunned Traynor and rocked him back into the line of fire of a huge Walsh right hand that took him off of his feet and into the ring ropes, prompting the referee stoppage before a count could even be fully administered.

Also on the card, Turkish-born Londoner, Ahmet Patterson, maintained his unblemished slate by stopping Ryan Aston to claim the vacant IBF international super-welterweight title.
