Vences Defeats Ramos by Technical Decision in Vegas

By Marc Livitz: Andy Vences and Casey Ramos gave the fans at Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Las Vegas a good show on Friday evening. The "Texas versus California" bout was between

two undefeated fighters. Ultimately, a clash of heads in round seven placed a bout-ending cut under Casey’s left eye and Andy was awarded a unanimous technical decision and the vacant WBC Continental Americas super featherweight title.

Vences (17-0, 10 KO’s) was the quicker of the two as the fight commenced by way of his snapping left jab as well as attempted hooks. Ramos (23-1, 6 KO’s) did his best to effectively counter as he by and large followed his San Jose, California opponent around the ring. Andy snuck in a quick right uppercut just before the bell. Each man made the second considerably more memorable with increased activity. Vences stepped back and fired the jab from down low while his Austin, Texas adversary moved in closer to bang at
the body. Casey continuously tried to move Andy with his punches inside and he was beginning to connect a bit more as round four rolled around. He landed an overhand left less than a minute into the period as Veces had switched his stance to southpaw.

Andy moved back to orthodox in the fifth. The action intensified as they fought with great determination in the ring’s center. Vences’ left jab was connecting as before while Ramos landed his straight right after the set up with his own jab. A high placed left hook connected for "El Tiburon" Vences seconds into round six. "The Wizard" Ramos returned the favor with about a minute to spare. Casey looked to time his right hook whenever Veces got too close. The seventh was much the same. Andy preferred to fight at a distance while Casey wanted to bring the action into closer quarters.

The bout appeared close as it moved into its last three rounds. A cut opened under Ramos’ left eye just as the eighth was underway and referee Vic Drakulich briefly halted the bout. As the contest continued, each fighter was looking to time the other in the hopes of
landing the perfect shot. Their eyes were consistently locked in to each other. Replays confirmed the cut was brought on by a clash of heads. With about eighty seconds left in the ninth, Drakulich had Ramos walk to the ring doctor to examine the affected area,
which had worsened and had begun to openly flow red.

The bout was halted thereafter and as a result, the scorecards would determine the winner based on Nevada regulations which state totals determine the winner if a
clash of heads halt the contest after four rounds have been completed.

They read as follows: 87-84, 86-85 and 88-83 to the winner by unanimous technical decision, Andy "El Tiburon" Vences. Ramos suffered his first loss as a professional while Vences remained unbeaten and the new holder of the WBC Continental Americas super featherweight title.

"It is what it is. It’s my fault for leaving it up to the judges", said Ramos after the bout. "I’m going to go home and rest up. We’ll see what will happen in the next few weeks."
