Traietti Stops Tevino In Two

By Stephen Tobey: QUINCY, Mass. – Chris Traietti captured the vacant World Boxing Union Americas cruiserweight title with a second-round stoppage of Alfredo Tevino of Sonora, Mexico in a scheduled 10-round bout on Saturday, April 22 at the Marina Bay Sportsplex.

 

Fighting in his hometown, Traietti dropped Trevino three times in the second round before referee Leo Gerstel stopped the fight1 minute and 37 seconds into the second.

 

Each time, Traietti forced Trevino to take a knee after a series of body punches. Gerstel actually stepped in before Trevino went to the canvas for the final time.

This was the second straight win for Traietti after his points loss to Mike Lee in a bid for the U.S. Boxing Association light heavyweight title on Sept. 30, 2016. He improved to 23-4 with 19 knockouts.

 

Trevino, who was fighting in the United States for the first time, dropped to 8-2-1. He was unbeaten with one draw in his previous five fights.

 

Former New England welterweight champion Derek Silveira of Salem, Massachusetts returned to the ring after a three-year absence and stopped Engleberto Valenzuela of Sonora, Mexico in the second round of a scheduled eight.

 

Silveira dropped Valenzuela twice in the second round before Gerstel stopped the fight at 1:57. He dropped him both times with body shots. In the first, Silveira hurt Valenzuela with right uppercuts as well as a hook to the body.

 

Silveira improved to 11-1 (5). Valenzuela dropped to 10-11(3).

 

Featherweight Irvin Gonzalez of Worcester, Massachusetts stopped Oscar Eduardo Quezada of Sonora, Mexico in the first round of a scheduled six. Gonzalez (6-0, 6 Kos) dropped Quezada with a left hook. After Quezada got up, Gonzalez rocked him with a right uppercut, forcing Gerstel to stop the fight at 1:37. Quezada dropped to 3-2 (2).

Jean Pierre Augustin of Lawrence, Massachusetts stopped Andras Csomor of Budapest, Hungary in the fourth round of a scheduled six at heavyweight. Referee Steve Clark stopped the fight 55 seconds into the fourth on the advice of the ringside physician after Csomor sustained deep cuts around his eyes. Augustin improved to 12-0-1 (6). Csomor dropped to 18-16 (14).

 

Light heavyweight Brandon Montella of Saugus, Massachusetts stopped Mickey Scarborough of Orlando in the third round of a scheduled six. Montella knocked down Scarborough twice in the third round. Clark stopped the fight at 1:47.

 

Welterweights Danny Amaro of Dorchester, Massachusetts and Jonathan Perez of Lowell, Massachusetts fought to a four-round majority draw. Dan Fitzgerald scored it 39-37 for Amaro, while Tom Clark and Lucy Miller scored it 38-38. Amaro left the ring at 0-2-1 and Perez finished the fight at 2-1-2 (2).

 

Female welterweights Jillian Diauto of Brockton, Massachusetts and Lamarya Geary of Philadelphia made their pro debuts with Diauto prevailing by a second-round TKO. Gerstel stopped the fight at 1:11.

 

In a four-round middleweight contest Chris Thomas of Beachwood, New Jersey won when Lionel Young of Brockton, Massachusetts did not answer the bell for the fourth round. Thomas is now 6-0 (3); Young dropped to 1-4 (1).
