Former double world champion Robert Stieglitz scored a 10th round tko win over Sergey Khomitsky at the Anhalt Arena in Dessau, Germany on Saturday to win the vacant WBO Inter Continental super middleweight title.
Both Khomitsky and Stieglitz sustained injuries. The bout was stopped at the beginning of round 10 when unusually the referee stepped in to stop the fight when he believed Khomitsky’s corner was wasting time by taking too long to re-tape his gloves.
On the undercard Anne Sophie Mathis was disqualified after appearing to knock out reigning WBO female junior middleweight champion Christina Hammer. At first glance it looked as though Mathis had been declared the winner but after some confusion it was deemed that the ko punch landed at the back of the head. The bout ended in the fourth round.
