George Groves (24-3) cruised to a UD points win against Eduard Gutknecht (30-4-1) in the second defence of his WBA International Super-Middleweight title in his home town of London at the SSE Arena.

All 12 rounds played out in the same pattern – with Gutknecht rushing out of his corner eager to put the pressure on Groves. However, there was little in variety from him as he’d just walk straight into Groves, when he didn’t hit Groves himself (which was the majority of the time) it meant Groves could easily counter – which is where he did the damage on the night.

With one judge scoring it 119-110 and two scoring it 119-109, Groves was the clear winner, with his opponent somewhat lucky to make it throw to the final bell. A stoppage would have given the Londoner the cherry on the top he would have wanted to make a real statement to those at Super-Middleweight, but even with a cut right eye Gutknecht managed to stick in there.

This win could now push Groves right back into the mix at World level, with the added potential match-up between the winner between Badou Jack and James DeGale early in the New Year, with the domestic challenge from the young upcoming Callum Smith also looming large as a possible bout now.

The main support for the night saw Andrew Selby (6-0) stop the tough Filipino Jake Bornea (11-1) in the 7th Round to win the vacant IBF Inter-Continental Flyweight title.

Bornea who had never been stoppoed prior to tonight struggled to deal with the classy movement and speed from Andrew, the younger of the Selby brothers. The combinations of punches thrown from Selby at times was simply brilliant; from the body to the head, the footwork exceptional and the not so important...his entertainment factor.

The finish came in the 7th after Bornea suffered a cut over his left eye, with Selby confident and showboating at ease, the referee had one look then came back to stop it with little over ten seconds of the Round left.

It’s clear to see that Selby will follow in his older brothers footsteps and reach the World level. It’s simply a matter of time.

Further down the card Conrad Cummings (10-0-1) suffered his first loss, in a bitterly disappointing SD with two judges scoring 96-94 in favour of his German opponent, Ronny Mittag (28-2-1), for the IBF Inter-Continental Middleweight title.

Cummings seemed somewhat reluctant to string meaningful combinations together, but, definitely landed one the more meaningful punches throughout the fight including a peach of an uppercut in the early rounds. If you had tuned in late to the bout and seen the two men awaiting the decision, everyone would have thought Cummings had strolled it, considering the state of Mittag’s face - especially his right eye which had swollen considerably.

Not only does it represent Cummings’ first loss, but it also comes as his trainer, Shane McGuigan’s, first loss in the corner with any of his fighters. Support came in instantly from stable-mate Carl Frampton who Tweeted; “I had @ChampCummings winning 7 rounds to 3. Joke decision. Gutted for him” - Barry McGuigan ringside straight after the bout was in a more reflective mood stating it’s now about how Cummings comes back from this loss and pushes on again.
