Solis Defeats Cordero/Romero Dominates Barrera

By Juan Barajas: Saturday night at the Coliseo Olimpico in Guadalajara, Mexico, Francisco Cordero (23-1, 15 ko’s) and Jorge Solis (40-2-2, 29 ko’s) battled for six of a scheduled twelve round bout for the interim WBA World Super Featherweight title.

Solis came out determined, throwing heavy punches that overwhelmed Cordero and a body shot that dropped him at a minute into the fight, but the undefeated Cordero got up and battled back for the remainder of the round.

Cordero came on strong over the next two rounds, but Solis took control in the fourth, with combinations and a straight right hand that sent his opponent down again. Cordero beat the count and again was able to finish the round, but from then on, it was only a matter of time as Cordero barely made it through the following round.

Solis continued his attack in the sixth, landing punches at will and at 1:46 of the round, Cordero was saved when the referee stepped in, waving the bout over as Solis delivered a flurry of unanswered shots.

On the undercard, Omar Romero (30-3-2, 12 ko’s) dominated Ronald Barrera (27-8-2, 17 ko’s) in their scheduled 12 round bout for the WBC Light Flyweight title. Romero punished Barrera to the body and although there were no knockdowns, there was no shock when Barrera did not come out for the seventh round. Also as a preliminary, featherweight Rafael Guzman (25-2, 17 ko’s) won via fifth round tko over Sergio Lopez (11-1, 8 ko’s) at 1:40 into the round.
