Selby Earns World Title Shot By Defeating Rosales
On a Cyclone promotions night of boxing Barry fighter Andrew Selby 28, continued his march towards a world title shot after beating Cristofer Rosales from Nicaragua in a WBC eliminator in the Cardiff Motorpoint arena with two judges scoring it 117-110 and the other 118-109 in a fight that was a lot closer than the score cards indicate.
The arena was silenced when Selby went down in the first round but the Welshman came firing back and that set the tempo for the whole fight.
Rosales caught Selby a number of times with hard right hands and never took his foot off the gas but Selby made the necessary adjustments as the fight progressed and from my ringside position was doing enough to win most of the rounds but was forced to work for every second of the fight.
At times Selby’s defensive boxing skills were majestic and its clear to see why some people have started calling him ‘The Matrix’ often turning defence into attack with blistering speed and accuracy.
Speaking to the Channel 5 after the fight Selby stated, "I don’t learn moves in the ring, it just comes naturally, to be honest, I don’t really like boxing. If I did like it, can you imagine how good I would be?”
In the co main event Matty Askins from Blackpool broke Welsh hearts by stopping Cardiff’s Craig Kennedy in the 6th round with a dominant display of power punching to win the vacant British cruiserweight title.
Right from the first bell Askins was looking to throw his right hand over Kennedy’s low lead left hand and it found its target a number of times with devastating affect putting Kennedy on the canvas. Kennedy did well to survive the round but was in desperate trouble again in the 2nd round as Askins right hand found the target.
From that point on it seemed like it was only going to be a matter of time until Askins landed the punches needed to finish the fight.
Over the next few rounds Kennedy was circling on the outside of the ring trying to keep out of danger with Askins patiently stalking him , scoring with jabs and waiting for the moment to launch the right hand.
The finish came in the 6th round as Kennedy was forced on to the ropes he took a huge right hand that put him down. He bravely got back to his feet but the fight was wisely called off by referee Bob Williams.
2012 Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans got his professional boxing career underway with a points win 60-54, over Najim Fennane in his first fight since the Olympics.
