Boxer Mike Towell, from Dundee in Scotland, has died after being stopped in a welterweight bout against Dale Evans at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow on Thursday night.
The Scottish boxer was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was diagnosed with severe bleeding and swelling to his brain.
Towell died in hospital at just after 11pm on Friday. According to reports the 25 year-old was knocked down in the first round and again in the fifth before the bout was stopped. Towell was reportedly transported from the ring on a stretcher.
Chloe Ross, the partner of Mike, said in an emotional Facebook post:
"I’m absolutely heartbroken to say my annoying best friend passed away tonight at 11.02 very peacefully.
"Michael had severe bleeding and swelling to his brain. He had been complaining of headaches for the last few weeks but we put it down to migraines with the stress of his fight.
"It has been the longest 24 hours of our lives. My baby has lost his daddy. But he will be so proud of his dad in what he achieved."
Prior to Thursday’s bout Towell had been undefeated in 12 bouts. The fight was an eliminator for the British welterweight title.
