Ryder Defeats 'Brit Basher'/Hibbert Grinds Down Martin
John Ryder finally restored some British pride by defeating Sergey Khomitsky at the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday night. On previous trips to the UK Khomitsky had defeated fellow Britons Jamie Moore, Frank Buglioni and Adam Etches but Ryder finally broke the cycle by securing a 12 round unanimous decision verdict by scores of 117-112 116-112 and 115-113.
Despite being cut over the right eye in the second round Ryder remained focused and boxed intelligently from the outside to secure the victory.
Khomitsky had his moments of success in the 10th round, noticeably with a solid left hand but Ryder stood firm and stepped up the pace in the 12th session to secure the win.
On the Matchroom promoted undercard John Wayne Hibbert scored a 12th round stoppage win over Tommy Martin in defence of his Commonwealth junior welterweight title.
Hibbert finally broke down the younger man late on with a combination of punches, forcing the referee Victor Loughlin call off the bout. Martin protested but was behind on all three judges cards in what was a highly entertaining battle.
The 31 year-old champ proved a little too battle hardened and experienced for his 21 year-old rival.
