Ortiz Wins Snoozer, McDonnell Scores Controversial Win,Sosa Defeats Smith

Former WBA interim heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz, 26-0-(22), scored a near shutout 12 round decision over American Malik Scott, 38-3-1-(13) at the Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco on Saturday night.

Scott seemed more intent on surviving than making a fight of it Ortiz decked Scott in round four and again in rounds five and nine. The scores were 120-105, 120-106, 119-106.

On the same Matchroom boxing promoted card WBA bantamweight champ Jamie McDonnell, 29-2-1-(13), retained his title with a controversial 12 round unanimous decision over Liborio Solis, 25-5-1-(11) . Solis can count himself very unlucky to not be crowned the new champ after appearing to look good for the win. Quite how the three judges saw McDonnell a 116-112, 115-113 and 117-111 winner is a mystery.

Jason Sosa successfully defended his WBA super featherweight title with a clear an unanimous 12 round points win over Britain’s Stephen Smith. Sosa, from Camden, NJ, decked Smith in round two. Sosa continued to dish out the punishment in round three, cutting him over the right eye. The brave but outgunned Smith took the fight to Sosa in the fourth round and there after but the eye injury and Sosa’s pressure fighting proved too much for the Englishman The scores were 116-111, 117-110, 116-112.

Former three time world title challenger Martin Murray outpointed the previously unbeaten Nuhu Lawal over 12 rounds to claim the vacant WBA Continental super middleweight title. The scores were 116-111 and 117-110 twice
