Tommy Oosthuizen scored a 12 round majority points win over Thabiso Mchunu to claim the African Boxing Union cruiserweight title at the Emperors Palace near Kempton Park in South Africa on Saturday night.
Oosthuizen won the battle of the southpaws by scores of 115-113 twice and 114-114. The key to victory for Oosthuizen was his right jab that landed with impressive accuracy to take the first four rounds. Mchuno, who was giving a away both height and reach, tried to work on the inside but Oosthuizen was just too smart for his foe. As Oosthuizen began to tire late on due to all the hard work he put in early in the fight, Mchuno began to catch Oosthuizen with the right jab solid lefts to the head.
Word around ringside after the fight seems to suggest that Oosthuizen could challenge fellow South African Kevin Lerena for the IBO cruiserweight belt.
On the undercard Ryno Liebenberg scored a fifth round tko win over against the smaller Alfonso Tissen to claim the vacant African Boxing Union super-middleweight title. The time of the stoppage was 1:48.
