O'Connor Delights Local Fans On St Patricks Day Fight Night


Danny O’Connor of Framingham, Mass retained his WBC Silver International super lightweight title with a 10-round unanimous decision against Steve Claggett of Calgary, Alberta, Canada on Saturday, March 17 at the House of Blues on Boston, Massachusetts.


Lucy Miller and Melissa Kelly scored the fight 97-92. Laurie Purcell scored it 96-93. O’Connor, who was making the first defense of his title, improved to 30-3 (11 knockouts). Claggett dropped to 26-5-1 (17).


Claggett scored the fight’s only knockdown in the seventh, landing a right hand that put O’Connor on his seat. O’Connor recovered and continued to execute his game plan. With Claggett coming forward, O’Connor threw straighter punches and combinations, while Claggett landed one at a time.


Claggett was cut along his right eye in the fifth round.


In the co-main event, TJ Donehy of Portlaois, Ireland, the IBF’s top-ranked junior featherweight, stopped Mike Oliver of Hartford, Conn. In the second round of a scheduled eight. Donehy dropped Oliver with a right cross. Oliver got up, but referee Kevin Hope stopped the fight at 2:18.


Donehy improved to 19-0 (14). Oliver, who was fighting for the first time since Oct. 17, 2015, dropped to 26-8-1 (8).


In a scheduled six-round junior lightweight bout, William Foster of New Haven, Conn. Stopped Nick Otiendo of Nairobi, Kenya in the second round. Foster 7-0, 6 KO s) dropped Otiendo at the end of the first round and early in the second before Gene Del Bianco stopped the fight 23 seconds into the round. Otiendo dropped to 31-14 (13).


Yurik Mamedov of Yarastavi, Russia won a six-round unanimous decision against Daniel Sostre of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico at welterweight. The scores were 60-54 (twice) and 59-55. Memedov improved to 9-1 (3). Sostre dropped to 13-17-1 (5).


Greg Vendetti of Stoneham, Mass. knocked out Engelberto Valenzuela of Sonora, Mexico in the first round of a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight bout. Vendetti improved to 18-2-1 (11). Valenzuela dropped to 11-13 (3).


Amanda Pavone of Burlington, Mass. stopped debuting featherweight Sarah Click of Framingham, Mass. after the third round of a scheduled four. Del Bianco stopped the fight at the end of the third. Pavone improved to 4-0 (2).


Romain Tomas of Brooklyn, N.Y. stopped Israel Rojas of Sonora, Mexico in the third round of a scheduled six at lightweight. Hope stopped the fight at 1:27. Tomas left the ring at 7-1 (1). Rojas dropped to 13-21 (5).
