Mitchell Targets Burns Showdown

Mitchell wants showdown with Ricky Burns
Mitchell wants showdown with Ricky Burns

Kevin Mitchell is aiming for a big summer showdown with rival Ricky Burns once he has smashed Felix Lora this Friday night.

Mitchell went through a power-packed media session today at the TKO gym in Canning Town and roared out a challenge to his Scottish rival.

Mitchell, 27, headlines a sold-out York Hall this Friday night when he takes on the Dominican Republican in a 10-round international lightweight contest.

The show will be televised live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 456/Virgin Ch. 546) starting at 8pm.

It’s Mitchell’s first fight since his win over John Murray - voted 2011 Fight of the Year by trade paper Boxing News - last July and now he wants WBO champion and stablemate Burns next.

The Scottish star already has a world title defence against Paulus Moses lined up for March 10 at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena, which is also live on BoxNation.

"I know it’s not good to look ahead at future fights, but beating Lora is the key to getting a world title fight with Burns next," said Mitchell.

"It’s the fight I really want and I genuinely like Ricky, he’s a super kid, but I’ll put friendship aside and smash him to bits to win the title - come on Ricky lets get it on,"

"I really like Murray, but look what I did to him, once the fight is over we’ll shake hands, it’s just the nature of the business that fwe are in,"

Mitchell is still focused on Lora and is not underestimating the former WBC International champion who’s now based in Barcelona.

"Lora is a bit of an unknown lot really, I’ve seen a few of his fights and he throws big winding shots, he looks tough, but I’ll make him miss and pay," added Mitchell.

"The pressure is on me, I’m back home at the York Hall with a big crowd so I’ve got to produce the goods - the heat is on,"

"I’ve trained hard and I’m in great shape and I’m ready to knock-out Lora."
