By Marc Livitz at ringside in San Antonio, TX: Local favorite Mario Barrios gave the crowd at the Freeman Coliseum a reason to celebrate and scream for joy. He scored a technical knockout victory over Eudy Bernardo just forty-five seconds in the second round.
Barrios appeared eager to delight his hometown faithful in the junior welterweight contest. He used his left jab with great efficiency early on and put a few of his punches together when Bernardo overcommitted. Still, Eudy wasn’t going to go away. He continued to press forward and looked noticeably crisper as the first came to a close. Less than thirty seconds into the second, “Golden Boy” Barrios’s feint left allowed him to load up and fire a perfectly placed jackhammer right to the chin of his Dominican Republic opponent. Bernardo slowly slumped, knees first to the canvas.
He showed guts by standing up before referee Jon Schorle reached the count of ten, yet one look at him told Schorle that the night was over. The contest was waved off less than a minute into round two. With the victory, Mario Barrios remains undefeated with a record of twenty-one wins alongside thirteen stoppages. Eudy Bernardo fell to (23-3, 17 KO’s).
