Former IBF and WBA welterweight champion Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito (40-8, 27 KOs) scored a 10round split decision win over Ramon “Inocente” Alvarez (23-5-2, 15 KOs) to win the WBO Continental junior middleweight title at the Baja California Center in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico on Saturday.
Margarito made a slower than expected start to the fight but upped the pace in the middle rounds to pressure the Mexican fighter. Alvarez tried to pressure the former champ but lacked the power to trouble Margarito. Alvarez was decked in round eight but recovered well to make a real fight of it in the 1oth and last round. The scores were 97-92 twice for Margarito and 95-94 for Alvarez.
Speaking after the fight Margarito said: “I want big fights, Cotto, Canelo, and not a rematch with Ramon. I am ready for big fights. Now I want to beat his brother Saul!"
Canelo’s brother Ramon Alvarez:“I thought that the decision was for me. I want a rematch. Margarito didn’t win. The knockdown was more of a slip than anything”
