A man was shot dead and Peter Taylor, the father and trainer of WBA/IBF lightweight champion Katie Taylor, has been seriously injured when a gunman burst into Mr Taylor’s Bray Boxing Club in County Wicklow earlier today.

According to reports a 50 year old man was killed when a gunman burst into the gym around 7am whilst boxers were taking part in a training session.

The gunman was said to have been wearing a high visibility jacket and balaclava. It is believed he was alone and used a pistol.

In a statement Garda Superintendent Pat Ward said: "We don’t know if it was indiscriminate or what the motive was, that’s something we are trying to determine at the minute, and we just can’t exactly say or confirm what the motive was.

"It was a normal session on a normal day and it was being undertaken by people who normally undertake that session in the early hours of the morning. This came totally out of the blue - it was a normal day for all of those people in the gym."

Regarding the injuries sustained by Mr Taylor, aged 57 and an unnamed 35 year-old, Pat Ward added: "They are very, very serious but they are not life-threatening at the moment, as we understand it," Mr Ward said.
