By D. Mossienko at ringside,: Ukraine’s undefeated WBO European featherweight champion Oleg Malina Malinovsky (19-0, 5 KO) successfully defended his belt in a 10 round clash against Nicaraguan based Spaniard Eusebio Osejo (29-19-3, 8KO) at the Terminal Sports Palace in Brovary near Kiev, Ukraine on Saturday.

This exciting boxing card was promoted by the Klitscko brothers promotional power house K2.

Malinovsky was drained by major effort to meet the 57kg limit. At the same time Osejo looked like did not even try to meet the weight and stepped on the scales at 59.5kg. Under pressure of stripping Osejo of the prize money, the champion’s side made sure Osejo did not weigh more than 62kg at 4pm on 12th November, the day of the fight.

It has to be reminded, that in September Osejo had very even fight with Russia’s former IBF feather weight world champion Evgeny Gradovich in Chelyabinks, having dropped the Russian star in round two, and having eventually lost by split decision, with one of the Russian judges scoring in his favor!! Osejo also had upon his sleeve experience of fighting with several world champions and winning WBC junior world championship.

On the fight night Osejo looked very strong. Southpaw Malinovsky, known for his very disciplined life style and fighting manner, started the fight against Latin southpaw in swift movement, peppering Osejo with right leading jab. The Nicaraguan rushed to mount pressure and enter the closer quarters, and that’s exactly where he was caught with Malinovsky’s right hook and knocked down after Ukrainian dodged from Osejo’s attack and counter-punched. The Latin fighter was swiftly back on his feet, but Malinovsky clearly won the opening stanza.

The following rounds saw Osejo mounting pressure, while Malinovsky was showing a very good foot work, counter attacks, and side steps with solid hooks. Malinovsky also showed a very good jab against the southpaw opponent. Malinovsky thoroughly followed instructions of his corner, with his coach demanding to provoke the Spaniard and countinue counter attacks. This tactic well paid off and Malinovsky was mounting advantage on the score cards.

Osejo in the meantime did his best to work the body, landing sometimes very solid bodyshots. He clearly was hopeful to eventually use his physical advantage in the late rounds. The fight continued at very high pace with the fighters trying all the way to seize initiative!

As all commentators agreed, jabs were Malinovsky’s bread and butter in the fight, although closer to the last third of the fight he landed increasingly more body shots too. However, as Oleg was getting tired, Osejo realized he was getting his chance, and Spaniard mounted pressure, some times landing big shots on increasingly tired Ukrainian. Still Oleg Malinovsky’s corner managed to sustain the pace of the fight and Oleg’s self discipline helped him to use versatile tactics to escape Osejo’s attacks. The Latin fighter was becoming desperate trying to seize control of the fight and in the beginning of round nine caught Malinovsky is an illegal shot south of the belt. After a minute of rest Malinovsky resumed fighting. Cascabel (or Rattle snake) Osejo jumped to press the Ukrainian. Oleg Malinovsky showed a very good footwork, but closer to the end of the round somewhat faded. In the final, 10th stanza, Malinovsky did not take chances and tried to limit Oseho’s activity by movement, crisp jab and counter-punching.. The last minute boxers spent pretty much in non stopping exchanges.

Judges gave Malinovsky unanimous nod. It was a very tough and well deserved victory 96:93, 97:92, 98:91.

In another co-main event, Ukraine’s former Olympian and bronze medalist from the London Games Denis Berinchik gave his best to survive the storm and edge with the victory in a very even and brutal eight rounds clash against Mexican basedSpaniard Juan Ocura. It was the fifth fight and the fifth victory of Berinchik in the pro-ranks.
