Legendary Trainer Lou Duva Passes Away

Legendary Hall of Fame boxing manager and trainer Lou Duva passed away on Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey at the age of 94.

It has been reported by his son Dino Duva that Mr Duva died of natural causes. Duva, who’s career spanned more than 70 years, trained or managed more than 19 world champions including Evander Holyfield, and welterweight champs Pernell Whitaker and Meldrick Taylor. Duva’s first world champion was middleweight Joey Giardiello in 1963.

Duva was born in New York on May 22,1922 and founded the family promotional business, Main Events in 1978. Duva was voted Manager of the year in 1985 by Boxing Writers of America and Trainer of the Year by the WBA in 1987.

Lou Duva’s son Dino said: “The overwhelming number of calls and sympathy wishes from so many friends and associates shows how much our father was loved and respected. We sincerely appreciate the support from everyone.” said Dino Duva.

The funeral will reportedly take place at St Mary’s R.C. Church, Union Ave,Paterson, NJ on Monday , March 13 at 10 am.
