Jones Jr Defeats Fan In Phoenix

By Ron Valderrama: Roy Jones Jr. had a short night in the ring Monday defeating Vyron Phillips, a hand-picked opponent with a mixed-martial-arts background in Phoenix, Arizona.

The featured main event boxing bout would have paid out nicely ($100,000) for Phillips had he beaten the legend. URshow.tv hosted the pay-per-view combat sports event which featured some legends of boxing, MMA, Grappling and Wrestling. The bout was scheduled for six rounds and was sanctioned by the Arizona State Boxing and MMA Commission. It was clear from the first bell that Jones had no worries of losing this bout, spending most the first round sizing up Phillips who did manage to land a couple of soft punches on Jones.

Towards the end of the first round, Jones landed some shots on Phillips that quickly caught his attention. In the closing moments of round one, Jones landed a blow that staggered Phillips, but Phillips managed to survive. The dream of beating a legend and a hefty payday faded quickly for Phillips in round two. In a moment of opportunity, Jones landed a clean and crisp right to the chin of Phillips that sent him down to the canvas.

Phillips was dazed but somehow managed to stand up, beating the count. Referee Wes Melton could see Phillips was in no shape to continue and wisely called a halt to the action at 2:30 of round two.

Ever since the announcement of this fight, the reviews have been mixed among boxing fans. The reviews on social media were mixed as well, some saying he should stop boxing and this fight is a disgrace to the sport. At the show, one fan said he was happy to finally see a Roy Jones Jr. fight in person and was totally satisfied. One thing is for certain, Roy Jones Jr. is his own man and calls his own shots. Whether we agree or disagree with him fighting, boxing fans at the show were for the most part happy to see Roy Jones Jr. in person. One can’t argue that Jones back in the day once dominated this sport. He has aged and is well past his prime, and no one wants to see him sustain an injury but it is up to Jones Jr. himself to call it a day. After all, he is his own man.
