John and Yordan Visit Vice President

Last night, WBA featherweight champion Chris John and IBO lightweight champion Daud Cino Yordan met with Indonesian Vice President Boediono and a select few Indonesian dignitaries. They shared dinner together at the Indonesian Consulate in Perth, Western Australia.

They talked about various subjects of which John would say, “It was a big honor to meet Mr. Vice President. He is a very good man and he represents my people well.”

Yordan greatly enjoyed the occasion, adding, “Mr. Boediono said he will be watching December 6th in Indonesia with the rest of the country and for Chris and I to make him proud.”

The wildly popular John, 34, comes from a very humble background in Semarang, Indonesia, a country with an estimated population of 240 million people. He has ambitions to one day work in congress in his homeland. “Boxers like Manny Pacquiao, [Acelino] Freitas and Vitali Klitschko are involved in politics in their countries (the Philippines, Brazil and Ukraine respectively). If I could make a contribution that would help Indonesia, I would love to serve my country in some capacity once I have retired from boxing. Though I intend to reign for a while longer and break [WBA champion] Eusebio Pedroza’s record [of 19 successful defenses over nearly seven years].”

Currently, both John, 48-0-3 (22), and Yordan, 31-3 (23), are training at Harry’s Gym in Balcatta, Australia.

John, who was awarded the WBA’s “Fighter of the Decade” award, will be looking to celebrate having been champion for 10 years when he meets tough South African Simpiwe Vetyeka, 25-2 (15), on December 6th. If successful, he would match Pedroza’s division record of 19 defences.

For his part, Yordan, who won the IBO lightweight title over the summer, will meet another South African Sipho Taliwe, 21-3-1 (14), as the co-main event.

The event will be broadcast live in Indonesia on RCTI, beginning at 9:00 p.m. (Jakarta time).
