Jake LaMotta Passes Away

Former world middleweight champion and Hall of Famer Jake LaMotta,has passed away at the age of 95.

 

His fiancé Denise Baker announced that LaMotta died of Dysphagia pneumonia at Palm Garden Nursing Home, in Miami, Florida.

 

La Motta was the inspiration for director Martin Scorsese’s 1980 Academy Award-winning film Raging Bull starring Robert De Niro. LaMotta’s 1970 autobiography was adapted for the film.

 

Giacobbe “Jake” LaMotta was born on July 10, 1922 in New York City, LaMotta, who was known as the “Bronx Bull” won the world middleweight title in 1949. LaMotta retired in 1954 with a very respectable record of 83-19-4-(30).

 

LaMotta was best known for handing the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson the first defeat of his career in 1943. The two faced each other six times.

 

LaMotta is survived by his daughters Jacklyn O’Neill, Christie LaMotta, Elisa LaMotta, and Mia Day; brothers Joe LaMotta and Al LaMotta; sisters Maria Hawfield and Anne Ramaglia. He is pre-deceased by two sons, Jack and Joseph, who died in 1998.

 

The funeral will be held in New York but no date and location has yet been confirmed.
