Once-defeated welterweight contender Mexico’s Freddy ’’El Riel’’ Hernandez, 28-1 (19), passed his stiffest test to date, scoring a fifth round KO over former world title holder DeMarcus ’’Chop Chop’’ Corley on the “ShoBox”-televised main event on Friday night at the Chumash Casino in Santa Inez, California.

Corley made life difficult for the taller and naturally-bigger Hernandez in the first couple of rounds, working well from the southpaw stance, jabbing and following with sharp, straight lefts against the Mexican. Corley would land spurious right hands throughout the first round, scoring a punch/push behind the head which sent Hernandez down to the ground.

The fall was waved off by referee Pat Russell.

Corley scored uppercuts early in the second round, with Hernandez slowly adjusting, countering while moving to his left, beginning to mount a body attack by the end of the stanza.

The Mexican walked back to his corner sporting a cut alongside his right eye due to an accidental headbutt.

Hernandez concentrated downstairs in the third frame, with telling left hands to the body which made Corley wince and begin to throw wider shots for the remainder of the round.

Both men fought mainly on the inside in the fourth, making it a rough go, with Corley looking to hold late in the round, due to the body attack coming his way. A short right hand by Hernandez and tangled feet sent the D.C. fighter to the canvas. The fall was correctly waved off by Russell.

Hernandez was urged in his corner to come out strong in the following round. “El Riel” did just that, pressing forward, going to the body, making his opponent swing wider and miss. Hernandez caught Corley with a wicked right cross on the jaw, locking “Chop Chop’s” legs upon impact, dropping him down hard on his back.

In no condition to get back to his feet, Russell called the fight off at the count of four.

Time of the stoppage was 1:48 into the round.

With his third loss via stoppage, Corley’s record dipped to 36-13-1 (21).

Contreras Halts Castaneda in One

In the co-featured bout, Francisco Contreras, 13-0 (12), of the Dominican Republic, halted Mexico’s Juan Castaneda, 16-3-1 (12), in the first round of a  scheduled eight-round super featherweight bout..

Castaneda, a four-time Mexican title holder, looked to brawl from the start, quickly getting out-classed by the sharper punching Contreras. The New Jersey-based fighter, who worked a clean jab, punched on the angles, landing a counter right hand, followed by a five-punch salvo to the head which sent the Mexican to the seat of his pants.

Castaneda would not beat the count, failing to get up due to a sprained knee.

Time of the stoppage was 1:38 into the round.
