Back in late August at the StubHub Center in Carson, Gonzalez pulled off the huge upset over Mares by stopping him in the first round on the strength of his lethal left hook. There was a rematch clause for this fight, enforced by Mares.
It’s not clear if Showtime, which was to have televised this card (most likely going to feature WBC super bantamweight titlist Leo Santa Cruz), will proceed with another telecast on February the 15th. As for where this rescheduled event may land, it won’t take place at the Staples Center, one of the busiest arenas in the world as it plays host to the Lakers, Clippers and Kings. On the night of March 15th - which has been thrown around as the new date for Gonzalez-Mares II - the Staples Center is hosting a game between the Kings and crosstown rivals the Anaheim Ducks.
