Gadapan Dominates Tinampay To claim Vacant  Title

Jonel Gadapan claimed the vacant WBF Asia Pacific Lightweight Champion after defeating fellow countryman Nelson Tinampay with a dominant performance on Sunday in Iligan City, Philippines.

While Tinampay entered the fight with the better record, it was Gadapan who took charge from the start and showed that statistics are just numbers, and that he had come to leave no doubt. With well-placed combinations to body and head, he repeatedly punished his foe from the first bell.

After five rounds, the corner of Tinampay felt that enough was enough, and informed referee Andres Manatad Jr. that their cut and bruised boxer would not come out for the next stanza, making it a sixth round retirement victory for Gadapan.

At the time of the stoppage, judges Francis Ian Obial and Marvin Artes had Jonel Gadapan ahead by scores of 49-45, while judge Roel Densing saw it slightly closer at 49-46.

The new WBF Asia Pacific Lightweight Champion improved his deceivingly spotted professional ledger to 11-8-2 (7), and, with his new momentum, could be entering the prime of his career at twenty-eight years of age. Tinampay lost for only the second time as a pro, falling to 9-2-1 (4).
