WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, 24-0-(12), may have retained his title at the Paisley Lagoon Centre in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday night but he was far from impressive in out-pointing Artur Akavov, 16-2-(7), over 12 rounds.
Akavov and Saunders traded on equal terms for the first half of the fight but Saunders seemed to wake up from the eighth round onwards to nick an uneventful 116-113,115-113 and 116-112.
Speaking after the fight Saunders said: “Tonight was really, really flat. I’d like to apologize to the fans…on that performance my name shouldn’t be mentioned with Golovkin (Gennady)and Canelo(Saul)”.
