Espadas, Angulo and Sponge Post Wins In Mérida
Mexican Elías Espadas won the vacant WBO Latino middleweight title Saturday after knocking the strong and brave Brazilian puncher Felipe Santos Pedroso inside three rounds at the Polyforum Zam Ná, Merida, Yucatán in Mexico.
Espadas was in great shape against Pedroso, who fell to a record of 17-3-0 with 12 knockouts. With fast hands and precise displacements, Espadas always showed himself superior to the Brazilian, who tried his experience, but could not remove the left jabs and straights from the boxer born in Mérida, Yucatán. The fight ended when Espadas caught Pedroso with a combination of hooks from both hands to the head and a precise hook to the liver.
Pedroso fell to his knees and could not get up before the 10 second count by referee Miguel Canul.
"It seemed easy, but it was not, I was sitting on a barrel of gunpowder, my opponent hits very, very hard, the few times he connected me I felt his punch and hurt me, but I tried not to show it and with the preparation I brought I decided to finish it as soon as possible to avoid problems; blessed be God I could do it ", commented a happy, but quiet Espadas.
ANGULO AND SPONGE ALSO WIN BY KNOCKING OUT THEIR RIVALS
For his part, the Colombian Roamer Alexis Angulo, confirmed his quality and his candidacy for the WBO super middleweight world championship, after putting out of action in the very first round his compatriot Evert Bravo, who hit the canvas from a solid right hand cross.
Angulo, who for the first time retained the WBO super middleweight crown, completed his triumph after referee Canul prevented Bravo from continuing.
The official result was a technical decision at 2:02 of round one. Angle, an A & T fighter, improved his record to 23 wins in 23 fights. Bravo fell to 24-8-1 with 18 kos.
Tyrone Spong had a worthy challenger in the person of the also Carlos Ailton Do Nascimento who technically knocked him out in the fifth round after catching him with a hook that nearly tore his head from his shoulders.
Spong, who scored a knock down a round earlier after putting a glove on the canvas, did not have a field day and should have tried to finish the South American who resisted his best shots in the four rounds, before being caught in the corner by his opponent. The American cruiserweight of Cuban origin, Anthony Martinez made a successful debut in the professionalism to win by abandonment in the fourth round to the Mexican Sebastian Palacios, who gave him several scares and seemed to carry much of the dominance of the fight that was possibly losing after neglect in the third and receive an unnecessary count in his corner for leaving late after the bell.
