By Ron Valderrama: Since coming out of retirement in 2013, Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz (42-4, 21 KOs) has won his last 6 fights coming into tonight’s bout against an aggressive and determined Cesar Vasquez.

The event was presented by Top Rank Boxing in association with The Raging Babe and televised on Solo Boxeo Unimas. In round-1, Vasquez (27-4, 16 KOs) stayed active and made use of the ring while the patient Diaz fought smart and waited for opportunities before throwing his punches. In round-3, Diaz fought a good inside game, using an assortment of uppercuts and blistering hooks that certainly caught the attention of Vazquez.

Credit Vasquez though, he kept moving forward although many of his punches failed to land with any effectiveness. Round 5, the four-time former champion Diaz showed no sign of slowing down, landing peppering combinations on Vasquez with lighting speed. In round-6, Vasquez came out of his corner throwing blows, refusing to cave. Diaz countered back and threw some vicious looping left hooks, snapping the head of Vasquez back. Vasquez has a chin, he was taking some hits and managed to still throw a lot of punches.

Diaz landed another left hook that stunned Vasquez. Diaz continued his pursuit with a barrage of punches, but Vasquez somehow managed to survive the round. In round-7, Vasquez came out swinging, like nothing happened in the previous round. But it wasn’t long before Diaz would make Vasquez pay, scoring points with almost every punch. In the end, the Vasquez corner calls it quits at 2:09 of round-8. Diaz said after the fight that he will fight anyone, anywhere, he wants a 5th title.

The Undercard:

Super welterweight, Alexander Besputin of Russia keeps his undefeated record alive, defeating Kevin Womack with a deadly left body shot at 2:08 of round-1. Besputin, trained by Robert Garcia improves to 4-0, 4 KOs. Besputin wasted little time, pelting Womack with some heavy-handed punches that had him hurt early.

In a well-matched Light heavyweight bout that was hard to score for the first couple rounds, Egor Mekhontsev battled Alexander Johnson toe-to-toe until he was clipped by Johnson with a crushing blow that had him stunned in round-3. Not to be outdone, Mekhontsev battled back and landed a few blistering blows in round-5. The action continued in round-6, both fighters exchanged punishing and hard blows. Without a doubt, Johnson was the quicker fighter, dodging and forcing Mekhontsev to miss many of his punches. Both fighters were a little sloppy in the final and 8th round, but it was clear Johnson was ahead on the scorecards. The judges scored the bout 78-74 and 76-76 X 2.

Light heavyweight’s, Dion Savage of Flint, MI traded blows with Valley favorite, Trevor McCumby in a scheduled 8-round bout. McCumby slowly punished Savage in the early rounds, but credit Savage for putting up a decent fight to this point as he constantly kept moving forward. In round 4, Savage had a point deducted for repeated low blows and finally was unable to continue at the conclusion of round-4 after being schooled by McCumby.

In what many considered to be the fight of the night, Alfonso Olvera and Jose Maruffo put on a show, and it started from the first bell of their scheduled Super lightweight 6-round bout. The first two rounds was a display of pure boxing, both fighters throwing a mass amount of punches. The action continued in the final round, two warriors refusing to give up, in the end, the Judge’s score the bout 60-54 and 58-56 X 2 in favor of Alfonso Olvera for the unanimous decision win.

Jesus Arevalo defeated Manuel Lopez by unanimous decision in a 4-round Super featherweight bout.

Jesse Ruiz of Phoenix defeated Mike Martinez of Tucson in a 4-round Super middleweight bout by unanimous decision. Albert Alvarez of Tucson defeated Yomi Heredia of Albuquerque by unanimous decision in a 4-round Super middleweight bout.

Gerardo Avila fought Jensen Ramirez to a majority draw in their 4-round Super featherweight bout.

It was an entertaining night of boxing in Tucson, fan’s had the opportunity to watch some hometown fighters.
