Derevyanchenko vs Russell Fight Overview

By Dmytro Mossienko: Jamaican Kemal Russell started the fight in Tunica carefully and so did Derevyanchenko, as they probably had seen each other for only the second time in life after the weigh-in. While Russell tried to establish the distance and tested the range with his left jab, Derevyanchenko showed a good, slick body movement. Coming from the WSB experience with their 5 rounds fights frame, Derevyanchenko looked now like still learning to hold his horses in a proper pro format in order to grab the victory from an unbeaten opponent.

In round two in respond to Russell’s attempts to apply his canon like right, Derevyanchenko started to counter with series of punches, connecting pretty well both to the body and to the upper floor, forcing Russel to miss a lot. In round 3 Russel looked somewhat overwhelmed by the Ukrainian fighter’s slick tactics, quality footwork and increasing number of punches landing. Derevyanchenko mounted the number of punches to the body. With his great experience in amature ranks (close to 400 fights) and in the WSB, he learned pretty well the importance of body punching for raising his winning chances in late rounds.

Although the Carribean fighter was far from giving up and was sending a lot of long jabs and hooks to the Derevyanchenko, the Ukrainian was increasingly proving his alias ‘The Technician”, finding new holes in the Jamaican’s defense. In the end of round three Russell connected with a good left hook, and the question remained whether Derevyanchenko would be able to continue at such a high pace the remaining part of the 10-rounds distance.

In the beginning of round four Russell yet connected several times, especially from the left. It lookled like Sergey Derevyanchenko was running out of gas, but that was only an illusion, as he came back with several counter attacks combining lefts and rights to the head with very meaningful uppercuts and hooks to the body. The sound of gong caught two fighters exchanging flurries of punches, yet it was clearly Derevyanchenko’s round, as he was the aggressor and outpunched his Jamaican opponent.

In round five Sergey started landing punches early and though Russell responded, continued his attackas, having Kemal on the ropes, Derevyanchenko landed three consequetive crisp right hands to the head, and as Russell stopped to answer with punches its became clear he was deep in trouble, deep enough, that after several more punches from the Brookline based Ukrainian the third man stopped the action with Sergey Derevyanchenko winning by TKO, gaining his 10th win, third consequetive TKO and ceasing unblemished record of his opponent.
