Crowd Pleaser Renda Returns On March 9

Next month’s boxing show in Peterborough features the return of Cello Renda.

Renda has been added to promoter Robert Waterman’s show at the Exec Arena at the East of England Showground on Friday, March 9 – and that means fight fans are guaranteed plenty of thrills.

Renda is a heart-on-his-sleeve gunslinger who has thrilled fans wherever he has fought.

Footage of his astonishing double knockdown with Paul Samuels in November, 2009 has had more than 350,000 hits on YouTube.

And his ‘Prizefighter’ final against Martin Murray is regarded as possibly the most exciting punch up in the tournament’s history.

Renda has been out of the ring since January, 2010 and the 26 year-old is targeting another crack at the English championship.

Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell currently wears the English title belt and defends against Leicester left-hooker Martin Concepcion at Trowbridge Civic Hall on Saturday, March 3.

Renda, a former British Masters champion, wants a crack at the winner of that fight and before he ends his exciting career, aims to bring the Lonsdale belt back to Peterborough.

Gary DeRoux became Peterborough’s only-ever British champion when he took the featherweight belt from Sean Murphy in a terrific, see-saw clash in March, 1991.

Renda admitted he was close to quitting boxing during his two-year break from the ring following a managerial dispute.

But he said: “I want a shot at the British title before I retire and I will carry on while there’s still a chance of that.”

Promoter Waterman also hopes Michael Maguire and Big Brother star JJ Bird will be added to the bill in the coming weeks.

Maguire was a world-rated amateur star and Bird is looking to re launch his professional boxing career.

Caine Brodie, from Gunthorpe, and former soldier Jake Dyer are also in action on the city’s first professional boxing show since December, 2007.

Waterman has confirmed Polish power-puncher Marcin Marczak will box on the show.

Marczak, currently based in Finchley, was a knock-out winner in front of the Eurosport cameras in his last fight and said: “Hopefully we can fill the arena with Polish people. I know people like to see knock outs – and that’s what I try to give them.”

The show will raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and tickets are priced £75 for diners, £50 for ringside seats and £30 unreserved. They are available from 01733-882565.
