Terence Crawford made the second defense of his WBO junior welterweight title against "Hammerin" Hank Lundy at Madison Square Garden on February 27. The HBO televised bout was Crawford ninth appearance on the network and represented his New York debut. Opening the festivities was former Puerto Rican Olympian Felix Verdejo against unbeaten Brazilian William Silva in a ten round lightweight affair.

In the main event, Lundy gave as good as he got in the first round landing the heavier shots on the champion. The champion almost immediately shifted to southpaw after getting tagged. Crawford fought under constraint as he studied Lundy, but the Philly fighter’s effective aggression with the left hand looked to produce the better work. Crawford dictated the pace better in round two. Lundy’s aggression was put in check mostly by the Omaha fighter’s jab. Lundy remained game, but found himself more on the end of the champion’s jab than in previous rounds. Lundy’s herky-jerky attack lost some impact as the technically savvy champion adjusted his attack based on what he observed from his experienced challenger. Lundy made the shift to southpaw in round four and emerged from an exchange with a cut on the corner of his right eye. Crawford’s punches increased in volume and bad intentions as he moved in to finish it early. A pair of left hooks wobbled the challenger in round five. Seeing his opening, Crawford went in for the kill and moved his attack to the body. A follow-up left hook put Lundy on the canvas. The challenger rose on steady feet, but still in trouble. The champion swarmed his hurt foe, prompting referee Steve Willis to intervene at the 2:09 mark.

Crawford made his second successful title defense and lifted his ledger to 28-0-0 (20). Lundy fell to 26-6-1 (13). After the bout, Crawford was uncommitted to any specific challenger, but the consensus is that Manny Pacquiao could play into his future should he win his trilogy with Timothy Bradley next month. Ruslan Provodnikov is another contender Crawford would likely be paired with.

On the undercard, Felix Verdejo won a unanimous decision over William Silva in a lightweight bout. Verdejo showed patience in executing a sound boxing lesson to his credible foe, who was mostly outmatched due to speed. Verdejo remained unbeaten at 20-0-0 (14) and is settling into the role of boxer over puncher. Silva fell to 23-1-0 (14).
