Chicas Wins At Battle At The Boat 106

The blood started to flow from the forehead of Jonathan Chicas late in the eighth round, and did not let up.

An incidental headbutt opened up a nasty cut, which bled constantly for the remainder of the scheduled 10-round bout.

Chicas was able to overcome the blood and opponent Virgil Green in the main event of Battle at the Boat 106 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash.

Chicas, fighting out of San Francisco, appeared as the 97-93, 96-94, 96-94 on the judge’s scorecard to improve his career record to 15-2-0 with 7 KOs.

Green, of Vancouver, Wash., fell to 11-5-0 with the loss.

The two 142 pounders fought evenly through the opening four rounds before Green was able to find some success in the middle rounds, taking advantage of his significant reach.

After suffering the cut, Chicas became the more active fighter once the blood started to flow, taking control of the contest’s final three rounds, leading to the victory.

In the semi-main event, Isaac Tadeo (8-0-0, 4 KOs) remained undefeated by knocking out Tommy Turner (4-6-0, 3 KOs) in the second round (:59) of their 165-pound clash.

A vicious looking right to the body from Tadeo crumbled Turner to the mat late in the first round. Turner was able to survive the knock down and make it to the second round, but was on the receiving end of another hard body punch early in the second which once again sent him crashing down, ending the bout.

A tribute to Stan Naccarato, who passed away at 88 on May 25, took place during the show’s intermission.

Known as "Mr. Tacoma," Naccarato was a sports icon in the City of Destiny, helping not only the Battle at the Boat boxing series during its infancy, but also playing key roles with the Tacoma Rainiers, Tacoma Stars and Tacoma Dome.

Naccarato, who’s involvement in boxing stretches seven decades and touches nearly any figure in Washington state’s rich boxing history, served as the Battle at the Boat ring announcer for more than a dozen years, announcing multiple world title bouts and televised broadcasts.

Giovanni Cabrera upped his record to 2-0 by beating Jeremy McCleary (8-3-0) by unanimous decision (40-35, 40-35, 40-35). The 130-pound Cabrera knocked his opponent down in the first round, then proceeded to decisively control the contest over the next three rounds, opening up a nasty cut on the bridge of McCleary’s nose.

Will Marshall (1-1-0) notched his first career victory with a first-round win via TKO over a debuting Damian Savino. Marshall, of London, England, was dropped to the canvas midway through the opening round, but rallied, flooring Savino twice with the second one resulting in the bout being halted by the referee at the 3-minute mark.

Antonio Neal (4-5-0 3 KOs) defeated Will Hughes (5-5-0 3 KOs) by unanimous decision (40-36, 40-36, 39-37) in a match-up of 149-pounders, while Andres Reyes (4-1-1) fought to a majority draw (39-37, 38-38, 38-38) with Marco Cardenas (5-5-1, 2 KOs).
