Carita Stops Domingos In Two

By Stephen Tobey, Worcester, Mass. – Vinnie Carita’s game plan was a common one, punish the body and wear out his opponent before attacking the head.

On Saturday, April 1, the first part of that plan worked so well the second part was not necessary.

Carita picked up a stoppage victory when Gilberto Matheus Domingos did not answer the bell for the second round of their eight-round cruiserweight main event at the Palladium.

“I was hoping for more out of it,” said Carita, a 32-year-old from Pembroke, Massachusetts who improved to 16-1-1 with 15 knockouts. “I was looking to go to the head after attacking the body. It was just the right hand to the body and I threw a few jabs.”

Carita landed the right hand to the body, just under the ribcage, almost at will, and usually two or three at a time. In the final minute of the first round, with Domingos pinned in a corner, Carita landed a right to the body that dropped his opponent to his knees.

Domingos got up and finished the round. Just before the bell rang to begin the second round, his corner signaled to referee Mike Ryan to stop the fight.

The win was Carita’s eighth straight and his 13^th in a row without a loss. It was his sixth straight stoppage victory.

The 31-year-old Domingos, of Sao Paolo, Brazil, dropped to 22-7 (20). It was his fourth straight loss. Domingos is a former South American light heavyweight champion.

Carita is looking for bigger fights. His specifically expressed a desire to face former World Boxing Organization cruiserweight titleholder Marco Huck, who lost in his bid for the WBC title on Saturday against Mairis Briedis.
