Campbell Suffers Shock Defeat At Hands Of Mendy

Luke Campbell suffered a shock defeat via 12 round split decision against Yvan Mendy at the O2 in London on Saturday night.

Campbell was decked for the first time in his pro career on his was to a 115-112, 115-113, 115-113 split decision.

The 28 year-old Olympic Gold medalist made a good start by switching his attacks from head to body, though Mendy always looked dangerous.

Mendy connected with some solid single punches that always looked dangerous as Campbell attempted to slow Mendy by attacking the body. Mendy’s patient sporadic attacks paid off in the fifth round when he floored Campbell with a left hook.

The action slowed in the sixth round as Campbell stayed on the defensive but in the seventh Mendy regrouped and again connected with the right hand.

Campbell battled back in the eighth and ninth rounds but the former French champ continued to score the harder more eye catching shots, forcing Campbell onto the back foot. Campbell, sensing the fight was slipping away, rallied in the 11th and 12th rounds but Mendy hung in there to nick a close decision.
